About L profiles

L-profile (angle) is an open L-shaped section with two legs. Equal-leg angles (both dimensions identical) are defined by EN 10056.

The section is asymmetric: the principal axes of inertia (u, v) are rotated 45° relative to the geometric axes (y, z). L-profiles are used in trusses (diagonals, verticals), stiffeners, brackets, edge members and connections. Because of asymmetry, design must consider the shifted centroid and the difference in stiffness about u vs. v. For pure bending, L-profiles are inefficient. They are mostly used in tension or compression.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between y,z and u,v axes for L-profile?

Axes y and z are geometric (parallel to legs). Axes u and v are the principal axes of inertia, rotated 45°. The minimum moment of inertia is about axis v (weakest direction, governs buckling).

Where are L-profiles most often used?

In trusses as diagonals and verticals, as stiffeners, brackets, edge profiles, framing of plate walls. The flat edges make bolted or welded connections easy.

Are L-profiles suitable for bending?

Only marginally. The asymmetric section is inefficient for pure bending. L-profiles are preferably designed in tension or compression where their high area-to-mass ratio is useful.
