About IPE profiles

IPE is a European standard rolled I-beam with narrow parallel flanges. The designation comes from the French "Poutrelle I à ailes Parallèles européen". Dimensions and tolerances are defined by EN 10365, material properties by EN 10025.

Narrow flanges (width b ≈ h/2) give IPE beams a high strength-to-weight ratio about the strong y-axis, but lower resistance to lateral-torsional buckling — long unsupported spans require bracing. Typical applications: floor and roof beams, lintels, main crane runway beams. For compression columns, wider-flange HEA or HEB sections are preferred.

Frequently asked questions

What does IPE stand for?
IPE stands for "Poutrelle I à ailes Parallèles européen" (French) — European I-beam with parallel flanges. It refers to the European standard hot-rolled profile.
What standard defines IPE profiles?
IPE profile dimensions and tolerances are defined by EN 10365. Material properties (structural steel S235, S275, S355, etc.) are covered by EN 10025. For design according to Eurocode 3, see EN 1993-1-1.
What is the difference between IPE and HEA?
IPE has narrow flanges (flange width ≈ half of depth), HEA has wide flanges (width ≈ depth). IPE is more efficient for strong-axis bending, HEA is more versatile and preferred for columns.
What is the smallest and largest IPE profile?
Smallest is IPE 80 (depth 80 mm, mass 6 kg/m), largest is IPE 600 (depth 600 mm, mass 122 kg/m).
