About UPN profiles

UPN is a European rolled U-channel (structural channel) with a vertical web and two parallel flanges. Designation UPN = U-Profil Normal. Defined by EN 10365.

The section has one axis of symmetry (parallel to the flanges) — the centroid lies inside the section, shifted from the web toward the open side of the U. UPN is used for frames, ladders, roof trusses, vehicle side rails, and structures where the flat web face is advantageous (easy bolted connections). Because of asymmetry, the centroid position (ey) and the fact that the shear centre lies outside the section matter for design — eccentric loads cause torsion. UPN has much lower torsional stiffness than closed sections.

Frequently asked questions

What does UPN stand for?
UPN stands for U-Profil Normal — the European standard U-channel with parallel flanges per EN 10365.
Why is ey listed for UPN?
UPN is asymmetric — the centroid is not at the web midline. The value ey is the distance from the outer web edge to the centroid and is needed for moment and eccentricity calculations.
Is UPN suitable for torsion?
No — UPN has very low torsional stiffness (open section). For torsional loads, closed sections (SHS, RHS, CHS) are better, or UPN must be restrained against twist by structural detailing.
