About LU profiles

An unequal-leg angle (L a×b) has legs of different lengths and is defined by EN 10056-1 together with the equal-leg series. The longer leg gives the section higher stiffness in one direction — useful where space or stiffness demands are asymmetric.

Typical uses: lintels and masonry support angles, bracing, equipment frames, brackets. The principal axes u–v are rotated by an angle α (tan α tabulated), which unlike equal angles is not 45° — buckling is governed by the minimum moment of inertia Iv.

Frequently asked questions

When should I choose an unequal angle over an equal one?
When you need stiffness or bearing surface in one direction only — typically a lintel (long leg vertical) or an equipment ledge. For the same bending demand it is usually lighter than an equal angle.
What is the angle α in the tables?
It is the rotation of the principal axes u–v relative to the geometric axes y–z. For unequal angles it depends on the leg ratio — tables give tan α.
Which moment of inertia governs buckling?
The minimum principal moment of inertia Iv (axis v). Using Iy or Iz would overestimate buckling resistance.
