About RHS profiles

RHS (Rectangular Hollow Section) is a closed rectangular tubular section. Standards: EN 10210 (hot-finished) and EN 10219 (cold-formed).

With depth greater than width, RHS has higher moment of inertia about the strong y-axis, making it more efficient for bending than SHS. RHS combines the directional stiffness of open I-sections with the torsional stiffness and clean aesthetics of closed sections. Used for horizontal beams under significant bending, lintels, industrial frames and elements subjected to combined bending and torsion.

Frequently asked questions

When should RHS be used instead of IPE?
RHS is chosen where the member is subjected to combined bending and torsion (IPE has low torsional stiffness), or where a closed section is required for aesthetic or manufacturing reasons (clean surface).
What is the difference between RHS and SHS?
SHS has a square section with Iy = Iz, RHS rectangular with Iy > Iz. RHS is more efficient in bending; SHS is better for multi-axial loads or columns.
Why two standards, EN 10210 and EN 10219?
EN 10210 covers hot-finished sections with larger corner radii and more uniform material. EN 10219 covers cold-formed sections: cheaper, but with sharper corners and less uniform microstructure.
