About HEM profiles

HEM is the heaviest European wide-flange H-beam series (M = extra heavy). It has the thickest web and flanges in the HE family and is intended for extreme loads. Defined by EN 10365.

HEM is used in specialized structures: heavy crane columns, bridge piers, highly loaded columns of high-rise buildings, structures with large concentrated loads. Due to higher cost and mass, it is used only where HEB is insufficient. Standard buildings typically use HEA or HEB.

What does HEM stand for?
HEM denotes the European H-series M profile ("extra heavy"). It has the thickest flanges and webs in the HE family and is designed for the highest loads.
When should HEM be used?
HEM is used for extremely loaded elements: heavy columns in high-rises, bridge piers, crane structures. For normal buildings, HEB is usually sufficient and more economical.
Does HEM have a different depth than HEA/HEB?
Yes. For larger sizes, HEM has greater overall depth than HEA/HEB of the same designation because extra-thick flanges extend the section. E.g., HEA 300 h = 290 mm, HEB 300 = 300 mm, HEM 300 = 340 mm.
