About UPE profiles

UPE is a European parallel-flange channel defined by EN 10365 (formerly DIN 1026-2). It is the modern successor of the UPN series — parallel flanges simplify bolted connections (no tapered washers needed) and give a more efficient section at equal depth.

UPE is used for purlins, side rails, stair stringers, frames, and often in back-to-back pairs forming a symmetric built-up section. Design must account for the offset centroid (ey) and the shear centre lying outside the web — a single channel in bending tends to twist.

What is the difference between UPE and UPN?
UPE has parallel flanges, UPN tapered ones (8%). UPE bolts up without tapered washers, has a thinner web and is usually lighter at the same depth. UPN is the older series, still common in renovation work.
What standard defines UPE profiles?
Dimensions and tolerances are defined by EN 10365 (historically DIN 1026-2). Material properties are covered by EN 10025, design by Eurocode 3 (EN 1993-1-1).
Why are channels used in pairs?
Two channels welded or bolted back-to-back form a symmetric section with the shear centre on the axis — eliminating the twisting problem of a single channel.
