About IPN profiles

IPN is a European rolled I-beam with tapered inner flange faces (14% slope), defined by EN 10365 (formerly DIN 1025-1). It is the oldest series of European I-beams — in new construction it has largely been superseded by the parallel-flange IPE.

Today IPN is mainly used in renovation and member replacement in older buildings, in metalwork, and as runway beams for hoists and trolleys (the tapered flanges suit trolley wheels). Bolted flange connections require tapered washers.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between IPN and IPE?
IPN has tapered inner flange faces (14%) and rounded edges; IPE has parallel flanges. IPE is more efficient and easier to connect — the standard for new builds, while IPN persists in renovations.
Is IPN still produced?
Yes — the IPN 80–600 range is still part of EN 10365 and is rolled, mainly for replacements in older structures and specific uses such as hoist runway beams.
What does tf mean for IPN?
For tapered flanges the mean flange thickness is given — the thickness at mid-outstand of the flange.
